Archeworks inspires new visions for reclaiming, transforming, and sustaining natural environments and urban communities. In the 2013-14 academic year we are partnering with NeighborSpace, Chicago's non-profit land trust dedicated to volunteer-run community gardens, providing long-term protection for more than 85 vegetable, flower and prairie gardens across the City. NeighborSpace is actively engaged in organizing communities and empowering local residents to expand green space and improve the quality of life in Chicago neighborhoods.
Using field research methods and facilitated discussions with NeighborSpace gardeners and other stakeholders, the Archeworks design team will assess the challenges facing established and emerging community gardens. Informed by the principles of universal design, the team will consider the need for accessible and inclusive design concepts that serve gardeners of all abilities. We will develop a tool kit of best practices and working models that help strengthen community engagement, improve garden productivity, and promote the city-wide network of gardens with a broad public. Areas of focus may include innovative garden design and new forms of garden infrastructure; environmental best practices for water conservation and soil health; strategies to improve garden communication and outreach; and a campaign to raise the public visibility of NeighborSpace gardens.
