LEARNING FROM WASHINGTON PARK

2017-2018 PARTNERS: WASHINGTON PARK DEVELOPMENT GROUP AND WE ALL LIVE HERE

Archeworks is partnering with the Washington Park Development Group and We All Live Here to develop design/build projects exploring possibilities for activating open space in the Washington Park neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side. This research and design effort will be an echo of the 1972 book, ‘Learning from Las Vegas’, and will consider how design can respond to the beliefs and values of everyday citizens, rather than strive for heroic monuments.

In Chicago, there is a strong correlation between the amount of open land in a neighborhood and the crime rate. Participants in this program will research the statistical and psychological significance of open space, then work with local residents and land owners to develop and implement design projects. In doing so, we will use design as an agent of positive social change that will trigger new readings or functions of open land in this community.
